Greg is highly experienced at taking his groups to the most spectacular places in the Victorian High Country. The beauty of Craig's Hut, The Bluff and the Jamieson River will stay with me and us forever. He knows the tracks and rivers tourists would take a long time to find.
Smithie is a gentleman and knows caravans and four wheel drives well. We were able to relax and enjoy the campsite and the scenic drives. He is always there giving helpful advice on how to drive the tracks and his campfire chats were a great way to end the days.

The organisation, the passion of our guide "Smithie", the quality of the support vichele, and the breathtaking locations all combined to create an adventure that I’ll be talking about for years.
Smithie was simply outstanding — friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about sharing his love of off-roading and the High Country. His attention to safety and detail gave everyone total confidence, even those who had less experinece than others were made to feel in total control. The radio communication was constant, helpful, and often hilarious — full of good banter and expert driving tips.
The route itself was simply unbelievable. We tackled challenging tracks, river crossings, and bush trails, all leading to jaw-dropping lookouts and incredible hidden campsites. Every stop offered something unique — whether it was a stunning view, local wildlife, or the chance to learn something new about the landscape and its history.
The camaraderie within the group was another highlight. By the end of the trip, it felt more like travelling with old friends than strangers. Evenings around the campfire were relaxed, fun, and filled with stories and laughter — a perfect way to wind down after an epic day behind the wheel. We even had the odd game of cricket

Greg is a fantastic guide. His knowledge of the high country is incredible. You can tell he has travelled the area for many years and knows so many amazing little campgrounds and tracks that most people wouldn’t get to see. And it’s more than just the tracks, it really is a full experience. The campfire, cooking and stories, sitting around the fire makes for a really enjoyable trip. Great weekend away with The 4x4 Experience, Beautiful views, some great 4x4 tracks and great people. We learnt so much about our own backyard, how to drive safely off road and visited places we would never have seen in a million years. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to explore more of our state without the worry of getting lost.

Smithie deserves a huge call-out. From the first minute it was obvious he knows his craft not just the driving, but the landscape, nature, camping, the history, and every track we touched along the way. He kept the group laughing, shared awesome stories, and turned a bunch of strangers (of all different ages) into a tight crew who you’d think were mates before the trip. You can tell he loves what he does and is so passionate, and it lifts the whole trip.
The weather hit us hard on the last night, but he was out in the dark scouting an alternative route that ended up being one of the highlights - technical, gnarly, and exactly what we wanted. Blue Rag was a standout, and the night wrapped perfectly with a Porterhouse on a campfire plate Smithie loaned us.
Our group ranged from seasoned drivers to total beginners, and he managed everyone with ease. You always felt you could trust his call.

We had the most amazing weekend away with Greg 'Smithy'.We went to Craig's hut, Tomahawk hut, No3 hut, Bluff hut, Lovics hut and Jamisons hut.
The company, conversation and his knowledge of the area and all things 4x4 is outstanding.It was my birthday and he even got me a cake.
We are now planing to do (at this stage) another 4 trips with him.

Wow! What can I say?
We chose The 4x4 Experience because we heard the owner operator, Greg Smith, or “Smithie,” knows Victoria, South Australia, and many other parts of Australia like the back of his hand. A local through and through, he has explored the Victorian High Country and beyond since he was a child.
Every tour is small and bespoke, thoughtfully planned, with Smithie personally scouting each destination to make sure the trip is safe, seamless, and full of unforgettable experiences. He is also an incredible teacher and a natural leader who supports you every step of the way.
If you want to learn about The Man from Snowy River and visit the places it was filmed, join one of Smithie’s Victorian High Country tours. Highly recommend, and we cannot wait to join his upcoming Flinders Ranges tour, which is bound to be an absolute treat.

A fantastic trip, led by a highly experienced, supportive and knowledgeable guide.
Well paced travel, challenging but not too difficult tracks with safe water crossings leading to stunning views. The unexpected snow on our last day driving up to Bluff Hut was truly magical.
It was lovely to travel with a small group (max 6 cars). It gave us all a chance to get to know our fellow campers over chats round the camp fire and to share stories of 4WD trips and tips.

The weekend with The 4x4 Experience was wonderful!As a single female with limited experience driving 4WD I felt totally supported and guided with Smithie at the lead. His vast knowledge of the tracks in the High Country included history of the iconic huts which was very interesting.
Unfortunately, I had a flat tyre - no problem for Smithie who had it changed and cause identified before we headed out for the day.
I would thoroughly recommend Smithie to anyone with hardly any experience, to those who have ‘done it all’ and anyone in between . I look forward to going on another tour soon.
