About Smithie - Your Guide
Back in the early 1970s, when my family purchased our first 4WD vehicle, a whole new world of adventure opened up for us. A few years later, my father followed his passion as a professional landscape photographer, giving me the unique opportunity to travel across Australia as a child.
This upbringing ignited my lifelong love for 4WD vehicles and the call of the open road. Naturally, my first car was a 4WD—and I’ve never looked back. Fuelled by an insatiable curiosity and a deep need to explore, I carved out a career in the 4WD industry, mastering the art of maintaining, building, and accessorising these vehicles for every purpose imaginable.
My passion led me into off-road competitions, from gruelling long-course rallies to intense winch challenges and intricate navigation events. These experiences sharpened my skills in vehicle preservation, recovery, and safe driving under extreme conditions.
Over more than three decades, I’ve led 4WD trips, corporate events, and media experiences across some of Australia’s most iconic—and challenging—terrain. Eventually, it was time to take things to the next level. That’s why I launched The 4x4 Experience—a way to share my passion, knowledge, and decades of adventure with fellow enthusiasts.

As a registered and insured tour operator, proudly accredited by Parks Victoria and the Victorian Tourism Industry Council, we specialise in guided 4WD adventures across Victoria’s High Country, Outback South Australia, the mighty Murray River, and beyond.
Our family-friendly tours are thoughtfully designed with scheduled stops, ensuring everyone — from the youngest explorers to seasoned adventurers — can enjoy the outdoors at their own pace.
We keep our tours personal and immersive by limiting groups to just 6 vehicles. This smaller size allows for a more personal experience.
Every trip is a Smithie tour — created, led, and run by Smithie himself. We don’t outsource our guides, because we believe your experience deserves the care and expertise that only comes from years of first-hand knowledge and passion for the regions we explore.
